Your Water Source:  Part One

Where does your water come from?  How much do you drink per day?  What type of water do you cook with?  Water contains many nutrients and minerals our bodies need every day.  Fluoride is a mineral shown to be significant in reducing tooth decay.  Water, toothpaste, food, and other drinks are sources of this important mineral.  Contact your county extension agent to have your water tested for the level or fluoride present.   Ask your dentist about how you can be sure that your family is getting just the right dose to enjoy the lifelong benefits of strong healthy teeth.  Authored by Eric Hogan, DDS

Your Water Source:  Part Two

Have you ever had your water tested to determine if your water contains the optimal level of fluoride (0.7-1.2ppm)?  What does this mineral mean to your health?  For children, its presence affects the shape, strength and appearance of their developing teeth and throughout life is an effective means to control or stop tooth decay.  If your fluoride levels are too low, supplements are available through your dentist or pediatrician to provide the appropriate amount.  Too much of a good thing is not healthy either.  Fluoride is known to cause spotting of enamel in very high concentrations.  Some water filter systems are able to remove from the water and therefore reduce the fluoride intake for your family. Consult with your dentist or pediatrician in order to ensure that your children are receiving the proper amounts of fluoride.
