![]() Swish for Oral Health Mouthrinses can be a powerful adjunct to regular oral hygiene and dental care. There are three broad classes of mouthrinses: antibacterial, anticavity and rinses to help address dry mouth. Mouthwash is also meant to freshen breath and loosen food caught between teeth. An antibacterial mouthrinse like Listerine® or Pro Health® will reduce the level of bacteria in your mouth that cause cavities and gum disease. There are also prescription strength antibacterial rinses that are available through your dentist which assist patients who have gum or periodontal disease. ACT® is a fluoride rinse that strengthens or remineralizes teeth that are prone to cavities. These rinses are especially good for children and should be used right before bedtime after all food and beverages have been ingested. Children who can’t reliably spit, should not use a mouthrinse of any kind. Biotene® is a rinse that has natural enzymes that help to act like a saliva substitute and is indicated for patients who are afflicted with dry mouth. People with dry mouth should avoid rinses with alcohol. If you need to avoid rinses that contain alcohol due to dry mouth or other health reasons, Tom’s of Maine® and Crest Pro-Health® are both alcohol free. You are most effective at rinsing when you swish for 30-60 seconds and do not rinse after swishing. Be aware that mouth rinsing is not a substitute for brushing and flossing! Rinses that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance are products deemed safe and effective by the American Dental Association. Please note that we do not endorse any specific oral rinse. Consult your dentist to find out which mouthwash would best fit your needs as some rinses can cause staining, altered taste and dry mouth. -Authored by Robin Hogan, DDS and Awna Schweitzer, RDH
