![]() The Pucker Factor You’re probably thinking about kisses, however, I’d like to redirect your thoughts to sweet and sour candies. Altoids Mango Sours®, Wonka Fun Dip® powder and Too Tart Extra Sour Goo® to name just a few are becoming more popular amongst children and adults today. Sour candies have a very high amount of acid in them, high enough to burn your gums and cheeks. Your tooth enamel (the strongest surface in your body) is not resistant to the acid attack of these sour treats. The acid causes your enamel to dissolve away, not to mention that the sugar content causes cavities. You may notice cupping of the back teeth, roughness along the edges of the front teeth, discoloration and even sensitivity to hot, cold and sweets. How do you prevent erosion of your or your child’s enamel? First, reduce or eliminate consumption of these sweet and sour candies. Don’t suck on candies for a long period of time as it lengthens the time the acid sits on teeth which causes extensive damage over prolonged periods of time. Consider chewing sugar free gum with xylitol to produce saliva which can neutralize some of the acid. It is not advised to brush immediately after consumption because your enamel is weakened and you can actually cause it to abrade away. It is recommended to wait one hour before brushing, swish with water, milk or eat cheese to neutralize the acid from the candy. When you do brush, be certain to use a toothpaste with Fluoride or Calcium and Phosphate. So, consider kisses instead of candy and be sure to see your dentist for your regular check-up to learn more about how to keep your teeth for a lifetime! –Authored by Robin Hogan, DDS
