Diabetes and Your Oral Health
According to the American Diabetes Association, 20.8 million Americans have diabetes. Diabetics are at twice the risk for periodontal (gum) disease than those of non-diabetics. Periodontal disease is an advanced infection that can progress to the point that the bone and soft tissues around teeth are destroyed. Periodontal disease typically worsens oral health, which then deteriorates blood sugar control. Fluctuating blood sugar is linked to diabetic complications such as heart and kidney disease. This is not to suggest a cause and effect relationship, but a common association between the two. To assure the best oral health, it is important to be attentive with brushing and flossing, but also to be aware of your overall health and well-being. Regular visits to your physician as well as your dentist will inform you of any undiagnosed conditions that you may have.
